The Cambrian Line links mid Wales with England

A rail users' group has praised the idea, saying it will give passengers "more options". Currently trains run about every two hours.

The proposals also include reopening a disused platform at Aberystwyth station.

The Welsh Assembly Government, Network Rail and Arriva Trains are working on a feasibility study into the project.

Around eight trains a day currently cover the route, stopping at towns and villages including Caersws, Newtown, Machynlleth and Welshpool.

Denis Bates of the Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth Rail Passengers' Association (Sarpa) said: "If there are more trains there will be more options for passengers and that's very positive.

"This will also allow passengers access to more connections."

However, Mr Bates said the service would require Network Rail to introduce more passing places along the single track Cambrian Line, which links mid Wales with England.
