Motorist named after police crash
Royal Shrewsbury Hospital
Mr James was airlifted to hospital but died
A motorist who died when his vehicle was in collision with an unmarked police car has been named.

Gareth Edward James, 43, of Llandegley, Powys, was pronounced dead in hospital on Monday shortly after the crash, while the police officer needed surgery.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating and has appealed for witnesses.

The two-car accident happened at 0730 BST between Newtown and Dolfor, Powys.

Mr James, who was driving a Vauxhall Astra, was airlifted to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital while the police officer was taken by ambulance.

The policeman, a detective constable, suffered serious injuries and has undergone surgery.

IPCC commissioner for Wales, Tom Davies, said: "I would like to offer my sympathies to Mr James' family for their tragic loss."

After the accident, the road remained closed for most of the day while crash investigators examined the scene.

An IPCC spokesman said on Monday that it was not thought that the police car, an unmarked Ford Mondeo, was responding to an emergency call at the time of the crash.

There is an appeal for witnesses to contact Inspector Gareth Davies at Newtown police station on 0845 330 2000
