Walkers tackling the Brecon Beacons can access the free service
A free website aimed at improving the safety of walkers and climbers heading to Snowdonia or the Brecon Beacons is being made permanent.

The Met Office site has been run on a trial basis providing information on weather conditions in both areas.

Sports shops, hotels and guest houses have been downloading information and print-outs have been placed on notice boards.

Now the Welsh Assembly Government has said it will keep funding the site.

The announcement was made by Welsh Sports Minister Alun Pugh on a post-Christmas walk to Snowdon's summit.

"The provision of a specialised and free service to walkers and climbers is an important safety feature," he said.

"We are fortunate in Wales to have a world-class environment for local people and tourists to enjoy, but the weather conditions at 3,000 feet can be very different to the weather in the valleys".

Over 30,000 people attempt to climb to the summit of Snowdon every year - on average there are six fatalities and about 70 injuries.
