Schoolboy's festival rocks on
A shortage of rock venues led to Sam James organising Castle Rock
A schoolboy who plans a rock festival in between swotting up for exams, has signed up some of Wales' up-and-coming bands for this year's event.

The Keys and The Hot Puppies, who regularly gig in London, will headline Castle Rock, now in its second year.

The lack of venues for rock bands to perform in the rural region inspired Sam Rhys James, 17, to organise the free festival last year.

Saturday's musical extravaganza has attracted 11 bands from throughout Wales this time, four more than last year.

Staged at Aberystwyth's 13th Century castle, Sam, an A-level student at the town's Ysgol Penweddig, organises mid Wales' only rock festival.

"There will be bands from Cardiff, Porthmadog and those with Aberystwyth links playing at Saturday's festival," said Sam, who is studying English, drama, music and art.

"It's been easier to attract bands this year because the profile of the gig has grown and people have been willing to play.

"About 500 people were at last year's Castle Rock and we expecting a few more this year.

Big hit

"There are people coming from Cardiff, north Wales and from the east in the Welshpool area, that I know of."

While Sam sat his exams his parents, Rosemary and Mike, helped him plan the event.

"My mum works for the council so she knew all about applying for the licence and my dad's a builder so he's helped with the practical side," said Sam, who plays guitar, piano and viola.

"We have built our own stage this year because last year we had a portable one and it was difficult to move round.

"My friends have been helping too, putting up posters round the town.

"We're also collecting for The Samaritans for a campaign it's launching to help cut back on teenage suicides.

"We thought that was relevant to young people."

Among the bands joining The Keys (formerly Murray Humph) and The Hot Puppies at this year's gig are Kentucky AFC, Swiss Tony and The Vendors, Mozz and The Poppies.
