| Friday, 15 March, 2002, 16:10 GMT Stewart to rock Stormont ![]() Rod Stewart is booked for Stormont Rod Stewart is set to rock the grounds of Stormont Castle this summer. The veteran singer will take to the stage in front of Parliament Buildings on 27 July and is expected to play to a sell-out audience. He is the latest in a series of big-name performances at the unique venue. Stewart will follow in the footsteps of Elton John and world famous tenor Pavarotti who have taken centre stage outside Northern Ireland's seat of government. The announcement was formally made on Friday by concert promoter Jim Aiken. Mr Aiken said the rockstar was looking forward to playing at the Belfast venue.
The 57-year-old star, who is famous for his gravelly voice, has sold more than 100 million records across the world since scoring his first number one hit with the enduring classic Maggie May. Other hits have included You Wear it Well, Sailing, I don't want to talk about it and Do you think I'm sexy. He feared he would never sing again after having a cancerous lump removed from his throat nearly two years ago. Stewart started his musical career in R 'n' B act Jimmy Powell and the Five Dimensions. In 1967 he joined the Jeff Beck Group, leaving to form The Faces with Ron Wood in 1969. His solo career saw him leave Britain for Los Angeles in 1975, where tales of his energetic social life multiplied.
