The headquarters is being sold because of a lack of volunteers |
A shortage of volunteers has forced St John Ambulance chiefs to put its Machynlleth headquarters on the market. The building was put on sale after declining numbers meant that the future of the group could not be guaranteed.
The decision has "saddened" bosses of the charity whose volunteers specialise in acting as first aiders at events.
Keith Dunn, the chief executive of the charity in Wales, said: "We have found it hard to find new volunteers".
"The organisation is finding it increasingly harder to find new volunteers especially in this area," he said.
"St John volunteers offer a vital service and we have been trying for some time to get new membership for Machynlleth," he said.
Volunteers
But after efforts by the charity failed to find more members to join in the town, the decision was taken to sell the hall.
"St John's has been in existence in Machynlleth for a long time and we are saddened that we have had to make this decision," said Mr Dunn.
"We want to be able to offer the services of our volunteers to the local community but we don't have enough volunteers there.
"With an increasing amount of leisure time and events, the first aid skills of our volunteers are needed more, but people just aren't coming forward to volunteer.
"It seems that the problem of not being able to attract more volunteers is a rural problem because in places like south Wales where there are more events going on people want to join us to get first aid skills," he added.
