Road closure brings rush hour chaos
Traffic
Car-sharing could help job growth, says Gerwyn Jones
The closure of a road in a mid Wales town that has caused three mile tailbacks during rush hour has renewed calls to motorists to explore other ways of getting around.

Primrose Hill Road at Llanbadarn Fawr will be shut due to improvement works for three months.

This has put more pressure on other routes in the Llanbadarn and Aberystwyth area and has led to three-mile tailbacks from the town centre.

Council officials say problems have increased after some diversion signs were moved by members of the public, and police are "keeping an eye" on the situation.

The traffic chaos led to mid Wales' traffic "tsar" Gerwyn Jones calling for people to examine other ways of getting around.

Parking problems

"I hope that as people are sitting in the traffic they might consider using alternatives to the single occupied car," said Mr Jones, the area's travel plan co-ordinator.

"These alternatives include public transport and car-sharing which can help reduce traffic jams, car parking problems and result in travel related costs for people being reduced."

Mr Jones is developing a car-sharing database for mid Wales.

"Major employers in the area have already expressed an interest in supporting the car-sharing initiative," he said.

"They see this as a way of helping recruitment and selection difficulties where accessibility to work is a real barrier.

"This is especially true in the more rural areas where traditional public transport provision may be limited."

Promoting, walking and cycling as ways of undertaking every day journeys is also part of Mr Jones' role.
