A car park behind could now be developed behind the Talbot Hotel |
A move to ease car parking problems in a small mid Wales town has been abandoned after residents organised a petition of opposition. People living at Penrodyn Road in Tregaron objected to a scheme put forward by Ceredigion Council to set up a public car park at Bwlchgwynt Chapel.
The site was being considered as an interim solution to the lack of parking spaces.
But the local authority has now jettisoned the scheme and will look at other options to improve parking in Tregaron.
I know there is a lack of parking spaces in Tregaron but Penrodyn road is far too narrow and winding to take on more traffic |
The 18-name petition was organised by community councillor David Rhystyd Hughes.
"It was a terrible idea to set up a public car park at the chapel so I decided to organise a petition," he said.
"It is difficult enough coming out of the present car park because of the position of the Chapel of Rest.
"Also a number of residents at Penrodyn are pensioners and this scheme would have caused them a lot of worry."
One of the residents who signed the petition was Rachel Evans.
Interim measure
"I know there is a lack of parking spaces in Tregaron but Penrodyn road is far too narrow and winding to take on more traffic," she said.
A county council spokesman said that the town needed more car parking spaces and that the idea to have a car park at Bwlchgwynt Chapel would only have been an interim measure.
"There are 42 spaces on the Abergwesyn Road car park behind the Talbot Hotel in the middle of the town," he added.
"We are looking to provide an extension to that car park.
"But until the extent of the extension is agreed, and the car park designed, we can't say how many more spaces there will be.
It is hoped there will be about 30 more spaces if the extension goes ahead.
