The project is expected to be finished by the end of 2004 |
The spartan image of a cultural centre familiar to generations of Welsh children is set to change for good. The Urdd centre at Llangrannog has conjured up an image of tents and wooden chalets since it opened in 1932 to promote Welsh language and culture.
But future generations will soon be able to enjoy the luxury of en suite rooms as well as taking part in activities such as skiing, snow-boarding, tobogganing and go-karting.
The changes come as part of a scheme to transform the complex.
A new block for 200 guests in en suite rooms facing Cardigan Bay has just been finished and a new leisure centre is expected to be completed next month.
New jobs
The rest of the project - which includes the erection of heritage and educational centres - is expected to be finished by the end of the year.
More than 18,000 youngsters and adults visited Llangrannog last year and with the new development the potential to increase this number is substantial.
"The developments have added to the flexibility of Llangrannog as an activity centre," said marketing manager, Lowri Jones.
"As a result the summer school which runs for four weeks throughout July can be offered to more people."
The plan aims to secure between 30 and 66 new jobs during the next few years.
The multi-million-pound project has been financed by Objective One European funding, Sportlot, Ceredigion Council, other bodies as well as 2m from the Urdd's own coffers.
