A new organic milk company in south west Wales has landed a prestigious contract -right on its doorstep.

Cwmni Tair Fferm (The Three Farm company), based at Abercych in north Pembrokeshire, was on Wednesday delivering its first consignment to the Urdd youth centre in Llangrannog, south Ceredigion.

The centre is switching to organic milk as part of its policy of healthy eating and using locally sourced products.

Almost 20,000 people, mainly children, visit the centre each year from all over the world, consuming 10,000 litres of milk.

Cwmni Tair Fferm was established three months ago by three local farmers.

They started by supplying two local shops but now distribute their milk to 75 outlets from Wrexham to Swansea.

The company is expanding rapidly to meet demand and is taking on extra staff to supply shops in Cardiff.

Carwyn Davies, one of the owners, said: "Already we are exceeding our first year targets and our aim is to open a creamery in the area.

"The only way we can compete on price is to deliver straight to the customer.

"We as producers get a fair price and the customer gets better value.

"The Urdd is an extremely important customer for us because a lot of children will benefit from our organic milk."

The Urdd camp in Llangrannog is a residential centre on the south Ceredigion coast set up in 1932 to promote Welsh language and culture.

Job creation

The multi-activity centre has development markedly in recent years and is now open for 50 weeks of the year.

It currently employs 55 people and a multi-million pound development will shortly create a further 33.

Centre director Steff Jenkins said: "We are always looking at ways to improve our service and standards and this fits in with that ethos.

"It is important to us because we can support our local economy.

"Our visitors have all sorts of diets which we try to accommodate."

The centre says this could be the first step towards obtaining other locally-sourced organic food.

The camp also has an environment policy and has reduced the amount of waste it produces by 66%.
