Martyn Digwood had managed Llanfyllin for 18 months |
The player-manager of a mid Wales football club has died in an Italian hospital after being hit by a car while on a trip to see the Wales-Italy soccer international. Father-of-two Martyn Digwood, 32, of Llanfyllin Football Club, died on Sunday, nine days after being hit by a pick-up vehicle while crossing a road at Rivoli, near Turin.
Mr Digwood suffered broken ribs, a broken pelvis and a broken arm, and was taken unconscious to intensive care.
His partner Helen, and parents Michael and Christine, had flown to Italy to be at Mr Digwood's bedside in the intensive care unit.
Mr Digwood, who ran Llanfyllin Insurance Services with his father, leaves a five-year-old son Mathew and three-month-old daughter Catherine.
A well known sporting figure in mid Wales, Mr Digwood had been player manager of the Spar Mid Wales League team for the past 18 months after a playing career with Wrexham, Welshpool, Oswestry, Llanidloes and Llansantffraid.
'Enthusiastic and bubbly'
Phil Ellis, chairman of Llanfyllin Football Club, was one of several club members, including Mr Digwood's brother Jamie, who had flown to Turin for the Wales-Italy game.
"This is terrible news because I had spoken to Jamie on Friday night when there had been no change in his condition," said Mr Ellis.
"Martyn was an enthusiastic and bubbly character and I never saw him in a bad mood.
"I will miss him not only as a manager but as a friend and this will leave a black cloud over Llanfyllin for a very long time."
Mr Digwood had been in Turin before planning to go on to Milan for the game.
According to Mr Ellis, Mr Digwood was hit by while crossing a road to go to a pizza restaurant a few hours after arriving in Italy on 4 September.
Llanfyllin are supposed to be playing on Saturday, but Mr Ellis said it was too soon if they match will go ahead.
