The father and uncle of world boxing champion Joe Calzaghe are planning a new knockout bid - on the charts.

Enzo and Sergio Calzaghe reveal in a BBC Wales radio show that they gave up a career in pop music to begin the family sporting dynasty.

Sergio Calzaghe claims his nephew might never have gone in the ring if his father and trainer Enzo had not decided to quit showbiz.

The pair reveal they plan to release Summer Boy once Joe's career is over.

Enzo Calzaghe is establishing himself as one of the great trainers of his generation.

His gym, in Newbridge, south Wales already boasts three world champions.

Of course we've got to get all this boxing out the way first, we've got these big fights to sort out.

But they reveal success in the ring might never have happened if they had not relinquished their previous song writing careers.

Talking to Radio Wales folk music expert Frank Hennessy, they explain how they were closely linked to the comedy pop group The Barron Knights, who signed them to a management deal.

Sergio Calzaghe said their "big gigs" included being a support act for Bucks Fizz, Paul Young, Edwin Starr and Shirley Bassey.

But his brother Enzo made quit as he had three children, including the young Joe.

He said: "It was probably the best thing he could have done.

"Because if we had moved to Milton Keynes [where the Barron Knights were based] maybe there'd be no Joe Calzaghe today, because obviously it would have been a totally different environment from Wales."

The two brothers aim to rekindle their showbiz careers with the debut of their song Summer Boy recorded in a studio n their boxing gym.

Sergio is lead vocals, with Enzo and Joe on backing vocals and all the instruments played by the brothers.

"This is what we do on the beach in Italy, looking at all the girls go by," said Sergio. He added: "We thought let's have something more relaxing, something with a summer feel to it.

"So the clocks have gone back once again and we want to say basically, I wish it was summer again."

Sergio said music must take second place to the fighting.

Calzaghe, the undisputed super-middleweight champion of the world. is to challenge American light-heavyweight Bernard Hopkins in Las Vegas on 16 April.

Sergio said: "Of course we've got to get all this boxing out the way first, we've got these big fights to sort out.

"Boxing is our first thing. But when we do the record Joe is going to be involved as well, but obviously now is not the right time before the fight."

I'll Show You Mine: Calzaghe Special is broadcast on BBC Radio Wales on Easter Sunday from 2000-2200 GMT and is repeated on Easter Monday at 2000 GMT.
