Olympic long jump legend Lynn Davies showed off a medal of a different kind when he picked up his CBE at Buckingham Palace. Mr Davies, 64, received his honour from the Queen for his services to sport, especially athletics.
The Nantymoel-born athlete, who won gold in Tokyo 42 years ago, called it a "great honour and a great thrill".
Mr Davies said: "She said: 'It's been a very long time'. I said 'Yes, Ma'am, it was 1964'".
He is the president of UK Athletics and was ambassador for the successful London 2012 bid.
"We talked about that. We're focusing on producing top, great athletes for the Olympics," he added.
'Big surprise'
Mr Davies said his CBE recognised "the sport and thousands of people who volunteer."
"I've been involved in sport right through my life. I didn't think I would receive any award. It was a very big surprise."
Mr Davies first met the Queen in 1964 after winning the gold medal and again in 1967 when he collected his MBE.
Nicknamed Lynn the Leap, he also acted as team manager for the British athletics squad at the 1980 and 1984 Olympics.

Mr Davies set the UK record of 8.23 metres in Berne in 1968, and it remained intact for 34 years.
The university lecturer is an honorary vice president of the British Olympic Association and a member of the Sports Council for Wales.
