UK Athletics president Lynn Davies is sure of a good performance from Great Britain at next month's Olympic Games. Davies, who took long-jump gold in Tokyo in 1964, has dismissed fears that the track and field team will leave Athens empty handed.
"I think we've got five medal chances with Paula Radcliffe, Hayley Tullet, Kelly Holmes, and the two (4x400 and 4x100 metres) relays," Davies said.
"Don't rule out people like Steve Backley or Chris Rawlinson either."
The Welshman has a rosier view than that of UK Athletics chief executive David Moorcroft, who has expressed fears that Team GB could struggle to win a single medal in track and field.
Davies is also delighted that there is a strong Welsh contingent in the Great Britain team capable of adding to the medal haul.
After finishing third in her Olympic event, the 1500m in the Grand Prix in Paris on Friday, Tullett was third in an international 800m on Sunday, won by fellow British runner Holmes.
At the same meet in Birmingham, Christian Malcolm ran his fastest 200m of the year, while Tim Benjamin came second to Jamaican Michael Blackwood in the 400m.
"It's great that we've got eight athletes out of 58 in the team," Davies said.
"I think Tim and Matt Elias stand a good chance in the 4x400m relay, Hayley is certainly in there with a chance, and Christian in the 4x100m relay."
