The club says it may leave Cardiff if the plans are refused |
Plans to build a temporary ice rink in Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, are to be reconsidered by Glamorgan County Cricket Club. The club asked for the application to be "held over" after council planners recommended refusal following objections from heritage body Cadw.
The proposal had been due to be discussed at a Cardiff council planning committee meeting on Wednesday evening.
Glamorgan chairman Paul Russell said the club would respond to objections.
Glamorgan also wants to raise its Sophia Gardens ground capacity to 17,000 as part of the planned development. The temporary ice rink would be built in the car park.
Mr Russell has said the club may have to look at plans to move from Cardiff if permission to develop the ground is refused.
'Formulate response'
Mr Russell told the BBC News website on Tuesday the plans had not been withdrawn but "held in abeyance", and would be considered at a later meeting.
He said the action had been taken following a meeting with the leader of Cardiff council and other council officials on Tuesday morning.
Mr Russell added: "Cadw raised one set of objections which we met and they raised the second set earlier last week - so they were sent in some 72 hours before the officers were due to make the decision.
"And critically they were sent in before we had the opportunity to formulate a response.
"Our team will be meeting with the planning officers from the council and with Cadw to go through the objections and to respond to them."
Cardiff council said in a statement it hoped Cadw would remove their objections after further discussions so the temporary rink could be built in time for the 2006 ice hockey season.
The city's ice hockey team, the Cardiff Devils, are being forced to give up their current city centre rink to make way for a 500m shopping complex.
They had hoped to use the temporary Sophia Gardens rink until they found a permanent home.
City's 'green lungs'
The council has said it will continue with other applications for ice rinks in the city to ensure a venue is ready for the club in September next year.
But objectors to the cricket club's scheme have argued that other locations should be considered above the Sophia Gardens proposal.
Neil McEvoy, of the pressure group Save Our Parklands, said: "A new ice rink should be built at Leckwith to kick start the Cardiff City [football club] stadium development or at the sports village, to get things going down there.
"The city's green lungs should not be touched. The cricket club also need a sensible development, not the huge expanse at the expense of the local environment currently on the table."
