The Wales National Ice Rink is due to be demolished |
Ice hockey fans say they may hold up a 500m Cardiff shopping scheme amid a row over plans for a temporary rink. Land at Glamorgan Cricket Club's home was proposed as a temporary home for the Wales National Ice Rink, which will be demolished for the shopping centre.
It is in doubt after historic monuments body Cadw objected and planners agreed.
Cardiff Devils supporters say they may sleep in at the rink. Cardiff Council wants talks on a temporary rink at a new sports village site in Cardiff Bay.
Glamorgan Cricket Club has proposed an ice rink in the car park at the Sophia Gardens ground, as part of wider redevelopment of the facilities at the club.
A new rink will form part of the snow box at the planned sports village |
But on Thursday the redevelopment plans were recommended for refusal by officials, ahead of a meeting of the council's planning committee next week.
The council cited concerns over the impact the development would have on nearby Sophia Gardens park and Pontcanna Fields, and the lack of alternative car parking space if the ground's existing car park were turned into an ice rink.
The current ice rink in Cardiff city centre is due to be demolished to make way for the St David's 2 shopping precinct.
'Conservation area'
Dave Newton, of the save our rink fans' group, described it as a "desperate situation," as they had been under the impression that plans were proceeding smoothly.
Mr Newton said the group had always maintained they would not move out of the rink unless the Cardiff Devils and the ice skating community had a home.
"We have volunteers within our group who are quite happy to sleep in the ice rink and stop the bulldozers if necessary," he added.
Liberal Democrat council leader Rodney Berman said the authority was still going ahead with plans for a permanent replacement ice rink in the new International Sports Village.
Ice rink users opposed the shopping development |
Mr Berman said the council was still also putting forward its initial proposal for a temporary rink on another part of the sports village site.
He said he wanted to meet the operators and users of the existing rink to explore options for the temporary rink, which could include looking again at the sports village.
Gwenllian Lansdown, Plaid Cymru councillor for Riverside, said a decision on a new site was needed soon.
"There is no doubt in my mind that we need an ice rink but it was sheer folly to consider developing it in Sophia Gardens in the middle of a conservation area, on greenfield, adjacent to Wales' most remarkable inner city parkland," she said.
"Work needs to begin promptly on the new ice-rink in the International Sports Village. This will kick-start everything else and be a tangible result after so many years of apparent inaction."
A permanent rink is due to be built at the sports village as the new home for the Cardiff Devils ice hockey team.
Cardiff council's planning committee is due to discuss the redevelopment plans at a meeting on 19 October.
