Welsh debut for chamber orchestra
Owain Arwel Hughes
Mr Hughes is leading the 43-strong orchestra
A Welsh chamber orchestra founded by conductor Owain Arwel Hughes is making its Wales debut on Wednesday night.

Camerata Wales will perform at Cardiff's St David's Hall, accompanied by harpist Catrin Finch.

Mr Hughes said it was "a fully professional orchestra of the highest standard", featuring Welsh players who have performed at the top level.

Discussions are already under way for the orchestra to tour America next year.

"I really want Wales to be seen as producing top class musicians in all fields and show the world what we have got," said Mr Hughes.

"We have some superb talent - it has to be of the highest standard.

"The players are either with orchestras or are freelancers who have the experience of being at the top level."

The orchestra premiered at the Chelsea festival in London in June.

"The reception was an immediate standing ovation - it was staggering and the players were very excited," said Mr Hughes.

He said Wednesday's Welsh debut, which will feature 43 players, was an important concert.

The orchestra, which has been supported by the Welsh Development Agency, will perform regularly in Cardiff and throughout Wales, as well as across the UK and internationally.

"I will be hoping to use Welsh soloists and a tour of the US is being planned for late 2006," he added.

"There are invitations from places in Europe and I want to tour Wales regularly as well."

A deal with Swedish record label BIS is also in place, with the first recordings due to take place this autumn.
