Relaunch for youth orchestra
St Asaph Cathedral
The concert takes place at St Asaph - Wales' smallest cathedral
More than 80 young musicians performed with an international violinist in two concerts, as a youth orchestra played for the first time in 10 years.

The North Wales Youth Orchestra was disbanded in 1995 because of funding problems.

The youngsters, who are aged 12-21, were brought together after a campaign to relaunch the orchestra.

On Thursday evening, they performed at St Asaph Cathedral with Russian violinist Natasha Korsakova.

They then travelled to Caernarfon for another concert on Friday afternoon.

The young musicians, who also play for their own county youth orchestras, have been receiving expert tuition as part of an intensive music course at Howell's School in Denbigh.

The six unitary councils in north Wales have provided funding for the new orchestra after persistent lobbying by music teachers and Arts Council officials.

Aled Marshman, who coordinated the concerts, said: "We're delighted that the orchestra has been reformed after such a long break."

"It's wonderful that these youngsters can have the experience of performing in concerts."

He said pupils from north Wales had been at a disadvantage in getting into national ensembles because there was no intermediate orchestra.

"This orchestra acts as that important transition between the county orchestras and the national ensembles."
