Up to 20,000 people attended the Calennig event in Cardiff

Despite low temperatures, around 20,000 revellers gathered in the Cardiff civic centre for the traditional free Calennig celebration.

This year's show was headlined by a Californian Elvis tribute show, and was preceded by a firework display in the nearby Cooper's Field park.

Deputy Leader of Cardiff Council Marion Drake said: "This has been another wonderful celebration of free family entertainment.

"Everyone seems to have enjoyed themselves enormously, and we are delighted the event has been a great success yet again."

Meanwhile more than 7,000 crammed into the city's Millennium Stadium, which was turned into a giant school disco for the evening, complete with school buses creating a giant "playground" dance floor.

Police said the festivities had passed peacefully.

Earlier in the day, several hundred runners gathered in Mountain Ash, south Wales, for the traditional Nos Galan Road Race to commemorate the legendary runner Guto Nyth Br�n.

In Cardiff there was a police crackdown on troublemakers - more than 60 people were told to stay out of the city centre during the Christmas period.

The action comes after Wales' police forces launched another campaign this month to make people more aware of the risks of having their drink spiked.
