Stadium hosts school disco

Industrial heaters will keep party goers warm during the night
Preparations are well under way for what it is hoped will be the biggest New Year's Eve party in the UK at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

A total of 7,500 people are expected to flock to the site for a party with a "school disco" theme.

The pitch will be turned into a massive playground, with school buses flanking the pitch, and one of the longest bars in Britain will stretch 140 feet across the half way line.

Stadium general manager Paul Sergeant said he was confident the night would be a success.

"School discos have become increasingly popular as themed nights in recent times, so we saw that as an ideal theme around which to base our New Year's Eve celebrations."

The pitch will be turned into a nightclub with industrial heaters and a closed roof to keep party goers warm.

There will also be fairground rides dotted around the stadium, and a huge stage where the DJ's will perform.

The stadium can be turned into an ideal party venue
Paul Sergeant
Two weeks ago 70,000 Stereophonics fans were at the stadium to watch the band in action.

The stadium concert was part of the first major UK tour the Stereophonics have staged since 2001.

It was also the first chance for most Welsh fans to see the Cwmaman band performing minus their drummer Stuart Cable, one of the founder members.

The musician parted company with the band following disagreements over his outside commitments, which included TV work for BBC Wales.

Mr Sergeant said the stadium was an ideal place for music events.

"The Millennium Stadium barbeque we had on the pitch as a send-off for the Wales squad departing for Rugby World Cup gave us an idea of the versatility of our venue.

"We had over 500 corporate guests at that event and it showed us that, with the right attention to detail, the stadium can be turned into an ideal party venue."

Tickets for the event, which cost 10, have all been sold.
