'Better safety' for school journeys
Hannah Tanhai

The mother of a teenager who died after being hit by a bus in Cardiff is calling for more to be done to protect schoolchildren when they are travelling on public and private transport.

Luke Tanhai, who was 13, died in hospital after the accident involving a double-decker bus near Cardiff High School, where he was a pupil, last week.

Speaking for the first time since the accident Hannah Tanhai has told BBC Wales she wants better safety procedures and more supervision on transport for children travelling to and from school.

"There's got to be something in place," said Mrs Tanhai.

"If it means that another person who has to travel on the bus - an adult who is wholly responsible for the safety of the kids, then that has to be.

"Even if it means it's the community policeman that travels on that bus and its his priority of the day - that has to happen."

Mrs Tanhai is still coming to terms with the tragedy and she has been overwhelmed by the flowers and messages of support she has received.

She has said she will do all she can to ensure that something good comes out of her son's death.

Despite her great grief, she said she is staying focussed on the investigation into the accident.

"It cannot happen again.People have got to take notice of what I'm saying and people have got to be affected by Luke's death.

"Let's not let it get wasted in this way.

"Not one school bus should be allowed to get underway without every single person sitting down,"

Police are still investigating the incident which happened on the afternoon of Monday, 29 September near Roath Park in Cardiff.

Luke had not been to school that day but had arrived nearby just as pupils were boarding buses to go home.

The bus involved in the accident was one of Cardiff Bus's fleet. A spokesman said: "We are co-operating fully with the police, who are investigating the circumstances surrounding this tragic accident."

This latest school transport safety plea comes in the wake of another campaign set up by the parents of a 12-year-old from the Vale of Glamorgan who was also died in a school bus accident.

Stuart Cunningham-Jones was travelling home on the top deck of a Cowbridge School bus when it left the road and crashed on into a tree at Ystradowen, near his home, three weeks before Christmas.

His parents have since set up a pressure group, called Stuart's Campaign, urging better safety on school buses.
