Fans gear up for Finnish clash
John Hartson
Can John Hartson fire Wales into the Euro 2004 finals?
After being mauled in Milan, the Welsh football team is hoping to bounce back against Finland in Cardiff's Millennium Stadium on Wednesday.

But Finland are making a late surge to qualify for Euro 2004 as the campaign draws to a close, and are on a high after beating Azerbaijan on Saturday.

BBC News Online spoke to fans of both teams ahead of the big game.

Okko Kuivalainen, 25, is chairman of the Finnish national team supporters association, and has travelled over for the match.

How important is this game now?
Our chances of qualification are theoretical - it is not something we really believe in. After Wales won 2-0 in Finland, all the fans are coming here hoping to show how well we can play.

Okko Kuivalainen
Okko Kuivalainen said most people in Finland do not think the team will qualify
Are you looking forward to it?
Definitely. If we didn't stand a chance, I would support Wales, even against Finland. But now we have a chance, I am supporting Finland.

How will Saturday's results affect the teams?
We got something we expected, but for Wales it is the second defeat in a row. All the pressure is on Wales. Even our head coach is not talking about qualifying - but we could cause a major upset.

Are people nervous in Finland?
After the first game in Finland, no-one believed we could qualify - most people are more interested now in the ice hockey season than the football team.

What do you think the score will be?
2-0 Finland.

Can Italy be caught?
Italy will win the group - it will be a disappointment - I had hoped Wales would win - Wales have really good fans.

Lois Roberts, 27, translator, from Cardiff, will be cheering Wales in the stadium.

How important is this game now?
It is very, very important after the disaster the other night - we need to win this game. I think we should be positive and be more attacking - everything is on the line so they should go for it.

Lois Roberts
Lois Roberts is nervous about Wales' game, but is still optimistic about qualifying
Are you looking forward to it?
I am nervous, but there is no need to bow our heads - we should have faith in the players.

How will Saturday's results affect the teams?
Thinking back on Saturday, we should have been expecting a defeat rather than putting pressure on the players. At half-time people were too optimistic, because we had kept them out. The second half was disheartening and made the defeat in Serbia look much worse.

Will Wales qualify?
I am not as confident as I was, but I am still saying yes.

What will the score be?
2-1 Wales - Hartson and Earnie scoring.

Can Italy be caught?
No - they have won the group now, so we will have to battle it out in the play-offs, but I am still optimistic.

Finnish student Tinna Marja Kanninen, 22, is studying at Aberystwyth University and is in Cardiff for the match.

How important is this game now?
Finland still have a chance to go through, but I am going for the atmosphere.

Finland lost 2-0 to Wales at home
Finland were beaten 2-0 by Wales at the start of the campaign
Are you looking forward to it?
Yes - I am patriotic, but not a big spectator sport fan - but the atmosphere is supposed to be excellent. I am not sitting with all the Finnish fans, so I hope it will be friendly.

How will Saturday's results affect the teams?
Wales will be trying to do better than in Italy. Finland did beat Azerbaijan, but Finland lost 2-0 to Wales before, so they are looking for revenge.

Will either Wales or Finland qualify?
I certainly hope Finland will qualify.

What do you think the score will be?
2-1 Finland.

Arwyn Hughes, 29, is a farmer on Anglesey - he will be watching the game in his local

How important is this game now?
I think we need a point to get to the play-offs. Finland are a good team - two years ago, I would have said Finland would win, but Mark Hughes has really turned it around and we are in with a chance.

Arwyn Hughes
Arwyn Hughes believes Italy will win the group now
Are you looking forward to it?
Very much so - I cannot get to the game but will have a few jars in the pub watching it.

How will Saturday's defeat affect the team?
I was pretty gutted after Saturday. Either they will hide away or perform to their best - the players owe the manager a performance after two defeats.

Will Wales qualify?
It will be a real pity if we don't get to the play-offs - all the hard work has been done. At the start of the campaign I would have settled for this - in second place, with two home games to go.

What do you think the score will be?
2-1 Wales.

Can Italy be caught?
If they lose to Serbia there is a chance, but I don't think they will slip up - there have too much quality all over.
