Car park barrier death appeal
Car park barrier
The barrier crashed through the car's windscreen

A "freak accident" in which a man was killed by a steel barrier while on his way to the shops with his young daughter is being re-examined by police.

Kenneth Farr, 37, died a year ago when a barrier smashed through his car window at the entrance to the Asda car-park on Ferry Road in Cardiff.

The father-of-three, who worked at Panasonic in Pentwyn, was on his way into the Asda superstore car park in Cardiff Bay, when he died, exactly a year ago.

He drove into one of the car parks of the busy retail park, his daughter Jessica sitting in the back of the car.

He approached the steel security barrier across the road in front of him when it swung into his windscreen.

It crashed through the glass of his Austin Montego and struck him on the head.

Shoppers found his uninjured daughter crying in the back seat of the car.

On the anniversary of Mr Farr's death, detectives from Cardiff CID are conducting a joint investigation with heath and safety investigators from Cardiff Council.

This follows an initial investigation by South Wales Police on behalf of the Coroner.

They are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident, or have experienced problems with the barrier since it was installed in August 2000.

Anyone with information should contact Fairwater Police Station on 02920 571572 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
