Inquiry into store barrier death
car park barrier
The barrier swung and struck Mr Farr's car
An investigation is under way to discover why a supermarket barrier in Cardiff smashed into a customer's car, killing the driver.

Kenneth Farr, 37, from Penarth was out shopping at the Asda superstore in Cardiff Bay on Tuesday with his four-year-old daughter Jessica when the accident happened.

The steel security barrier swung into the windscreen of Mr Farr's Austin Montego and struck him on the head.

Mr Farr was taken to hospital but was later pronounced dead.

Shoppers found his daughter crying in the back seat of the car and she was pulled uninjured from the vehicle.

The victim's wife, Helen, 39, and their three young children are being comforted by family members.

It is understood the steel barrier was at the exit of the store and had been moved to prevent teenage skateboarders and joyriders using the car park.

We are all very saddened by this tragic accident

Asda spokesman
South Wales Police are investigating how the barrier swung round, causing the accident. One possible cause is a strong gust of wind moved it.

Police are now preparing a report for Cardiff coroner Dr Lawrence Addicott.

Inspector Andy Germain said officers were keen to speak to anyone who saw what happened or had passed the car park barrier earlier in the day.

Mr Farr worked at Panasonic's television and microwave plant at Pentwyn, Cardiff.

A Panasonic spokesman said: "Ken was a dedicated member of staff and received his 20- year service award last year. This is a terrible shock to all of us."

Neighbours said the victim's daughters, Emma, 8, Jessica, 4, and Hannah, 2, were "desperately upset".

An Asda spokesman said: "We are all very saddened by this tragic accident and our thoughts are with his family and friends."
