Firefighters spent more than six hours fighting a blaze at the old Dyfed Joinery building near Old Castle Road on Thursday

The fire was been contained to the roof area of the huge derelict building.

Householders were advised to stay indoors and keep their doors and windows closed during the incident.

Firefighters were called shortly before 1600GMT.

Using thermal imaging cameras, they continued to dampen the smouldering remain areas until after 2200GMT.

Asbestos fibres

A spokesman for Llanelli fire station said: "People should keep way from the area as it is not safe.

"They are putting themselves and others in danger.

"There have been on-going problems there."

Firefighters returned to the scene early on Friday to carry out further checks.

Council public protection officers were also checking to see if there has been any pollution following the fire.

There were fears asbestos fibres could be spread through the air if the roof was too badly damaged.

Carmarthenshire's head of public protection Philip Davies said: "Staff worked closely with the fire brigade and police to deal with a major fire.

"There was concern that the asbestos cement roof would be damaged by the fire, releasing asbestos fibres into the atmosphere.

"Advice was given that residents in the surrounding area should remain indoors with windows and doors closed until the fire was extinguished.

"That message was relayed by the police using loudhailers and squad cars.

"An examination of the surrounding area is underway to evaluate the extent, if any, of the level of pollution."
