People are being warned not to tamper with smoke alarms in their homes after a woman died in a fire in Wrexham. The unnamed woman, believed to be in her 40s, was killed after the blaze at a flat in the Hightown area. A man was also seriously injured.
The council has fitted smoke alarms in the flat - but they had been tampered with, according to the fire service.
North Wales Chief Fire Officer Simon Smith said he was angry that the message that smoke alarms save lives was repeatedly being ignored.
"If the public choose to deliberately tamper with smoke detectors, provided for their safety, it must be regarded as recklessness in the extreme he said," he said.

"If someone disables a smoke alarm by physically removing the detector, disconnecting it from its power supply or removing the battery they are placing their lives at serious risk.
"We would urge the public of north Wales to heed the lesson of this tragic incident and take the necessary steps to ensure such a tragedy never befalls their own family."
The blaze began in the lounge of the first floor flat early on Monday.
The lounge was badly damaged and the flat was engulfed by smoke.
Firefighters also rescued a man who is being treated for serious injuries.
The cause of the fire is under investigation but it is not believed to be suspicious.
Since the blaze community fire safety officers have been in the area offering free home safety checks and advice.
