Zeta home changes upset neighbour
Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas
Zeta Jones is building a dream home in Swansea
Film star Catherine Zeta Jones has upset one of her neighbours after altering the original plans for a 1m luxury home which is being built in south Wales.

The actress, who is married to Michael Douglas and is expecting her second child, is having the mansion constructed in Mumbles, near Swansea, where she grew up.

The original plans were altered to use the roof space for a larger bedroom space

Architect Michael Batcup

The couple have decided to add a third storey to the building to create a 70ft-long room at the top of the house, which has caused concern among residents.

One neighbour, who did not want to be named, complained to Swansea Council about the revised plans, claiming they would affect his privacy.

He said the new plans included 15 windows, including "one massive window extending from ground floor to ceiling level".

However, Swansea Council decided to approve the changes.

"A revised application has been received and approved to utilise roof space as accommodation," said a spokesman.

"We have had one letter of objection.

"The plan was approved after being considered suitable for the site.

"The work is being monitored and is progressing," he added.

Tree felled

Architect Michael Batcup revealed that the project, at Plunches Lane, was due to be completed in summer 2003.

"The original plans were altered to use the roof space for a larger bedroom space," he said.

"The new plans were approved and work is continuing."

"The property is now about 30% completed."

Earlier this month, it emerged that construction of the house was delayed by an 80ft-high sycamore.

The tree had to be felled because the branches were overhanging part of the development.

Zeta Jones, 33, and Douglas, 58, already own homes in Los Angeles, Bermuda, Majorca, New York and Aspen.

On Sunday, a newspaper survey revealed Zeta Jones was Wales's highest female earner in 2002.

The actress, whose latest role in the musical Chicago has seen her nominated for a Golden Globe, allegedly picked up 10.5m over the year.
