Jobs fears at blaze factory
Universal Furniture fire
Fire crews were at the scene for several hours
Workers at a south Wales factory destroyed by fire say they do not know if they still have jobs.

Staff were due to return to the Universal Furniture factory on 2 January after the Christmas and New Year break.

Now, they say they have no idea whether there are jobs to go back to.

Police investigating the cause of the blaze at the factory in Aberdare say they have not ruled out the possibility that it was started deliberately.

More than 40 firefighters tackled the huge fire at the factory warehouse, which started at 1730 GMT on Sunday.

Forensic investigations are ongoing, but police say it is too early to know for sure how the blaze, on the Robertstown Industrial Estate, began.

Acting Sergeant Paul Phillips, of South Wales Police, said: "Because it was a large fire we can't say whether it was deliberate or not."

No-one was injured in the blaze, but fire crews were still at the scene damping down more than 12 hours after the fire began.

The building was well alight by the time firefighters arrived and they were unable to enter the plant because the roof had collapsed.

More than 40 firefighters in six engines tackled the flames using two hydraulic platforms, with water pumped from a nearby river.

During the fire, police advised people in nearby Aberdare, Tredegar and Merthyr Tydfil to remain in their homes and to close their windows as a precaution.

Universal Furniture has been a major employer in Aberdare for more than 20 years, and makes furniture for major retailers including Allders and Harveys.
