| Friday, 20 December, 2002, 16:55 GMT Hain's office fights adult shop opening ![]() Cannabis seeds and legal herbs are being sold Staff at Welsh Secretary Peter Hain's constituency office in south Wales have said they will fight to have a neighbouring adult shop closed down. Piet Manca, who specialises in adult erotica, opened a new premises, Little Amsterdam, this week next to Neath MP Peter Hain's office.
The entrepreneur, who sells cannabis seeds, smoking paraphernalia and legal herbs, said he has received no complaints from members of the public. However, Neath MP Peter Hain's agent Howard Davies said he was fighting to have the outlet closed. Mr Davies said: "This sort of thing is not needed here," he said. "The street has been upgraded recently and this thing only downgrades it. "I have been in touch with the local authority to see if there has been any breach of planning regulations. "People want this shop closed down," he said.
Mr Manca, who also owns a shop in Blackpool, said he has spoken to Neath and Port Talbot Council and he claimed he did not need a licence to operate. "We won't serve anyone under the age of 14 and there are no children in prams in here," he said. "We have never been so busy - we run this business right and it is successful." He said he had turned a former derelict building into a thriving business and had given jobs to two people. The official opening will take place on 9 January and Mr Manca hopes to get a celebrity to cut the red ribbon. Advice centre Mr Davies said he had spoken to the Welsh secretary on Wednesday and said Mr Hain also feels the shop should be closed. The agent said he has spoken to people calling into the office and in the streets of Neath and said people have expressed their opposition. He said he had also contacted Neath and Port Talbot Council to see if there are any legal or planning issues that may be relevant. Mr Davies added: "The shop has been empty for a couple of months, that is true, but the message coming is quite loud and clear - this is not wanted." Mr Hain's constituency office is also used as a daily advice centre for people living in the area. A spokesman for Neath and Port Talbot Council was not available for comment. | See also: 03 Dec 02 | Wales 16 Dec 02 | Politics 14 Dec 01 | Business 30 Aug 02 | Wales 14 Aug 01 | Scotland Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Wales stories now: Links to more Wales stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
