North Wales Police are investigating the blaze
Arsonists gutted part of a north Wales primary school after fire broke out in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The blaze at Merllyn Primary School in Bagillt, Flintshire destroyed a mobile classroom used as a community changing room.

Those responsible are clearly useless morons, stupid vandals, who are spoiling this facility for everyone else

Headmaster Norman Closs Parry

The fire was started sometime after 0500BST, when intruders ripped off the doors of the temporary building and set it alight.

The attack has been particularly devastating for the community, coming at the start of the summer holidays.

A summer play scheme was due to use the facilities daily and the all-weather pitch was in full-time use.

Norman Closs Parry, headmaster of Merllyn Primary said he was close to tears when he saw the damage.

"At this stage I just don't know what we are going to do," he said.

"Those responsible are clearly useless morons, stupid vandals, who are spoiling this facility for everyone else."

The 140,000 community facilities were set up as a result of a local initiative in 1990.

Recently, governors at the school had prepared an application for grant aid to upgrade the changing room facilities, which were well-used.

Mr Parry added: "Someone knows who did this because someone did telephone the police.

"The scene is enough to make you cry," he said, as he examined the changing rooms, which are detached from the school building.

Police confirmed they were investigating what is regarded as a deliberate fire and appealed to anyone who may have any information to get in touch with CID officers.

A spokesman for North Wales Fire Service said an investigation had been carried out and the cause of the blaze was deliberate ignition.
