| Wednesday, 15 May, 2002, 16:13 GMT 17:13 UK School arson attacks probed ![]() The arson attacks have been over a ten month period Police believe a serial arsonist is responsible for fires which have damaged a south west Wales comprehensive school. The latest incident, on a portable classroom at Olchfa school in Swansea, is the sixth attack in ten months and the most serious yet.
More than 300,000 worth of damage has been caused in total and the school has lost four classrooms and a PE area. Staff are working with South Wales Police in attempting to identify possible suspects. This most recent attack which happened overnight on Saturday involved two simultaneous fires at either end of the school. The blaze completely destroyed textbooks, equipment, pupils' coursework and teaching resources which had been built up over a number of years. Disruption Head teacher Hugh Davies said he was appalled by the attacks. He said: "Pupils' educational experiences are being jeopardised and staff morale is being affected by the disruption and the constant risk of further attacks. "It is obvious to us that a determined arsonist is intent on causing maximum damage to the school. "We are working with the police and our own staff and pupils to identify a potential suspect who was caught on the school's CCTV system attempting to set fire to another part of the building at roughly the time of these attacks in the early hours of Saturday morning." During the clearing and cleaning process, the school says it hopes there is minimum disruption to the education of the pupils and the local community which uses its facilities on a daily basis. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Wales stories now: Links to more Wales stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||
