Supermarket giant Tesco has lodged plans to build a new superstore on a site near Falkirk.

Proposals for a 37,000 sq ft store and petrol station on the former Wrangler Jeans factory site in Camelon have been given to Falkirk Council.

The retailer has owned the derelict site at Glasgow Road, described by locals as an "eyesore", for more than a decade.

If given the go-ahead, the supermarket would be the third Tesco in Falkirk.

Planners at Falkirk Council have made no secret of their eagerness for the retailer and neighbouring landowners to move ahead with proposals to regenerate the area, known as the town's Western Gateway.

Planning committee

Jennifer Duncan, corporate affairs manager for Tesco, said feedback from locals had prompted the firm to finally lodge an official planning application.

She said: "The consultation process for the Camelon store has been very positive. Not only have we been encouraged to submit the planning application by Falkirk Council but the community has also been very supportive.

"Almost all consultation respondents backed plans for the new store, and 98% wanted a wider choice of supermarket shopping locally.

"People are keen to see the site regenerated and are looking forward to the benefits that would come with a new store, such as greater value and choice."

Ms Duncan said she was hopeful the plans would be in front of the council's planning committee by Christmas.
