Retail plans to replace 'eyesore'

Former Wrangler factory
The site has remained undeveloped for over 10 years

Supermarket giant Tesco has unveiled plans to build a new store near Falkirk which could create over 200 new jobs.

Proposals for a 35,000 sq ft store on the former Wrangler Jeans factory site in Camelon have gone on public display.

The retailer has owned the derelict site at Glasgow Road, described by locals as an "eyesore", for over a decade.

If given the go-ahead, the supermarket would be the third superstore for Tesco in Falkirk.

Planners at Falkirk Council have been keen that Tesco and neighbouring landowners move ahead with proposals to regenerate the area, known as the town's Western Gateway.

Jennifer Duncan, corporate affairs manager for Tesco, said the retailer expected to lodge an official planning application for an eco-store with Falkirk Council "in the next few weeks".

She said: "Not only will we be able to regenerate a site that has been vacant for many years now, but we will also be providing the store that will stop people from having to travel outside of the local area to do their food shopping."

The plans will be on display until Friday 19 June at Falkirk Indoor Bowling Club.
