A £27m state-of-the-art sports hub has been opened in Stirling.

The Peak, one of the main developments in the city's sports village project, houses a 25 metre pool, gym, climbing wall and ice rink.

The facility, which also features a nine-court sports hall and restaurant, has created 90 jobs for the area.

It is to be an official training centre for the London 2012 Olympics, with talks under way to give it the same role during Glasgow's 2014 games.

The Peak is expected to attract over 500,000 visitors a year, generating £1.8m for the city.

Tennis coach Judy Murray, the mother of British number one Andy Murray, was among those attending its opening.

She said the development would put Stirling on the sporting map.

She added: "The Peak is a tremendous addition to the sporting environment in Stirling and I have been hugely impressed with the way in which the complex has been developed and shaped to offer those who want to participate in sport the opportunity to do so at a level which suits their abilities."
