Authority faces elderly care bill

Council officials said the authority had to act over the charges
Clackmannanshire Council is facing a bill of at least 300,000 to refund charges made for elderly care services which ought to have been free.

The authority's legal bosses said refunds should be made for meal preparation fees.

A council report raised concern that local authority umbrella group Cosla could not be relied on to resolve the matter, ongoing since last August.

Clackmannanshire is also set to claim the costs back from ministers.

The authority stopped charging for assistance with meal preparation in 2004, following guidance from the Scottish Executive.

A Clackmannanshire Council report stated that a maximum sum of 300,000 was required for a one-off payment to current service users and an additional amount for former ones.

The report added that the task would take "some considerable time", with no additional resources available to carry it out.
