The group said obesity involved a range of issues
Scots academics from a wide range of backgrounds have set up a new research group to fight obesity.

The experts, based at Dundee University, said the problem was not just clinical, but cultural and psychological as well.

The group involves leading experts in areas such as paediatrics, genetics, neurosciences and nutrition.

Its main aims include investigating how to tackle the child obesity "time bomb" and treating the condition in the NHS.

More than a fifth of Scots are classed as obese, a condition which can lead to diabetes, stroke and some forms of cancer.

Prof Annie Anderson, chair of the research group, said: "Obesity is not just a genetic problem or a cultural problem or a clinical problem or a psychological problem.

"It is all of these things and that needs to be recognised as we try to deal with a global issue which is posing a major health risk in our society."
