Starting gun for sports summit
Commonwealth games medal winners
Mr McConnell was inspired by the Commonwealth Games team
Jack McConnell has paid tribute to Scots sportspeople's ability to compete and win on the world stage.

His comments came as a summit meeting to debate the way forward for Scottish sport, set up by the first minister, got under way at Stirling University.

It has brought top sportspeople and administrators together with leading politicians and officials.

They aim to find ways to bring success on the world stage and encourage more people to take part in sport.

"It's their chance to tell us what we need to do better - how we can get more people playing all types of sport," said Mr McConnell.

"The time I spent at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne was truly inspiring.

"There was a real buzz about the Scottish team and about Scotland. It showed that although we are small country, we can compete and succeed on the world stage."
