Many estates cater for activities such as mountain biking
Scottish estates have joined forces to encourage more people to take up sporting activities in rural areas.

Shooting and fishing are often seen as the main traditional activities on offer throughout Scotland.

But many estates now cater for more modern sports, such as mountain biking, rafting and horse riding.

A campaign to promote estate activities throughout Scotland has been launched at Atholl Estates and Mansfield Estates in Perthshire.

Atholl Estates head trustee Sarah Troughton said Scotland's estates now offered something for everyone.

'Variety of sports'

"At Atholl anyone can enjoy all sorts of activities, from walking and climbing to pony trekking, golf and water sports like kayaking," she said.

Mansfield Estates chief executive Suzanne Urquhart added: "Scone is of famous for its race course and polo ground, however we offer a diverse range of sports.

"We see more and more visitors using the estate for recreation. Estates across Scotland can be enjoyed through many varieties of sport."

Craig Wilson, of Perthshire adventure company Nae Limits, said some of Scotland's most exciting places for water sports could be found on its estates.

He said: "Perthshire is a great place to try something new. There's loads on offer, and its all tremendous fun."
