Planners oppose nursing home bid

Developers have proposed a 100-bed nursing home in Gretna

Plans for a residential development and nursing home on a former golf course in the south of Scotland have been recommended for refusal by councillors.

The proposals could see up to 200 houses and a 100-bed care unit built at the site on the outskirts of Gretna.

However, council planning officers said the scheme goes against policies on development in the countryside.

Dumfries and Galloway Council's housing committee will meet to discuss the proposals on Friday.

Developers Greenbank (IOM) have proposed more than £1m in community contributions if their plans get the go-ahead.

The money would be spent on education, affordable housing and water infrastructure in the area.

In a supporting statement, they said the plans could make Gretna a "significant point of growth" in Dumfries and Galloway.

Greenbank owns other land in the town, having previously acquired Raydale Park - the former home of Gretna Football Club.

However, it said it had been unable to secure the properties necessary to allow it to link that land to the golf course site.

It has now tabled a bid for the golf course development alone.
