Funds sought for homes expansion

The funds would allow works to the water network to proceed

A council is being asked to invest £500,000 in water works which could allow hundreds of new homes to be built in the south of Scotland.

Scottish Water plans a three-phase improvement to the network at Gretna.

However, it wants Dumfries and Galloway Council to make an investment to help the proposals to go ahead.

Councillors will be told that if they decide to support the project they would be able to recoup all the cash from housing developers in future.

Connections to the water network in Gretna have been a problem for some time.

It has been claimed that housing expansion has been held up by the lack of access.

Last month Scottish Water pledged an investment of more than £3m to increasing capacity on the network.

It was reckoned that could accommodate nearly 700 new homes.

Now the council has been asked to make a financial commitment to the scheme.

The issue will be discussed by the authority's corporate policy committee when it meets next week.
