Flooring firm confirms job cuts

Interfloor factory
The job losses will be split between two of the companies sites

A flooring firm has confirmed plans to cut 54 jobs at factories in southern Scotland and Lancashire.

Interfloor, which specialises in carpet underlay, is seeking the redundancies at its site at Heathhall, near Dumfries, and another in Haslingden.

A spokesman blamed the move on a downturn in consumer demand for its products.

He confirmed that consultation had now been started with trade unions across the two sites.

Under the proposals a total of 29 jobs would be lost in Dumfries with the remainder lost at the Lancashire factory.

Human resources director Gary McEwan said the move was due to "challenging UK market conditions".

He said: "The continued downturn in the housing market as well as lower consumer spending has had a significant impact on the floor coverings market.

"The decision has not been taken lightly and has been made to protect the future of our business in these challenging times.

"We will endeavour to minimise the impact on individuals through a number of mechanisms, including calling for voluntary redundancies."
