Funding assists regeneration bids

The funds could help regenerate towns like Dumfries

A fund has been set up to help towns in south west Scotland bid for a share of a 60m regeneration budget.

The Scottish Government recently created the scheme for upgrade projects across the country.

Dumfries and Galloway Council has set aside 100,000 in its annual budget to ensure towns in the area are able to apply for the cash.

Conservative councillor Peter Duncan said he hoped the region would be among the first to benefit.

He said: "We are one of the first councils in Scotland to set aside money to make sure that our bids for regeneration are fully appraised and ready to go.

"As soon as this fund is opened I hope that our applications will be first on the list and I hope our town centres will be among the successful ones.

"It's very demoralising when these national funds are allocated and all too often all the money goes to the central belt."
