Retail rethink discussions held

Dumfries town centre
Mr Brown is holding talks about the shelved plans for Dumfries

An MP is holding talks with developers who dropped plans for a multi-million pound retail project in Dumfries.

Centros shelved the scheme for the south west Scotland town blaming the global "credit crunch".

Dumfries and Galloway MP Russell Brown said he was concerned the decision would seriously delay plans to regenerate the town centre.

He has organised talks with Centros director Tony Williams to discuss the reasons behind its decision.

Mr Brown said: "Lessons must be learned from this so that if Centros comes back to the table, or another developer is found to take the project forward, everything possible is done to ensure it is delivered."

He added that a special government fund to help regenerate town centres like Dumfries might have a key part to play.
