Bogus caller gang targets elderly
Bogus caller, generic
The bogus callers struck twice in the space of an hour
Police have warned the public to be on their guard after bogus callers struck in Edinburgh and the Borders.

The first incident happened at about 1230 GMT on Thursday at Croft Street in Galashiels.

A group of three men called at the elderly man's home, claiming to be workmen. Once inside they distracted the victim and stole money.

The second incident happened at about 1330 GMT at Ravenscroft Place in the Gilmerton area of Edinburgh.

'Same group'

On this occasion, the three culprits gained entry by claiming to be from the water board, and stole cash after distracting the elderly female occupant.

In both incidents, the main suspect is described as white, 20 to 30 years old, 6ft to 6ft 2ins tall, with red hair and a north of England accent.

A police spokesman said: "We think that these two incidents may be linked, and we are concerned that the same group may strike again.

"We would like to take this opportunity to remind homeowners to verify the identity of callers that come to their door, and if in doubt, refuse them entry and contact the police immediately."
