The news situation is set to be debated at Holyrood |
The future of ITV news coverage in southern Scotland and Cumbria is to be debated by the Scottish Parliament. Plans to reduce its regional newsrooms have prompted concerns the Border TV area would be covered from Glasgow or Newcastle rather than Carlisle.
Berwickshire MSP John Lamont has now tabled a motion which will be discussed at Holyrood next month.
ITV has said the current set-up is not sustainable and the changes would deliver improved programming.
Mr Lamont said he welcomed the opportunity to debate the news situation in parliament.
"Borders TV provides a fantastic service to the Borders, Dumfriesshire, Northumberland and north Cumbria," he said.
"Any attempt to merge these television services would dilute the vital local dimension to our news coverage."
