Kremlin kilt taken to Red Square

A tartan firm has been targeting the Russian market with the production of a design inspired by Moscow landmarks.

Borders-based Lochcarron of Scotland took the tartan to the Red Square for the Kremlin Zoria - the country's first international military tattoo.

The company has previously produced special designs dedicated to Shrek and the endangered capercaillie.

VisitScotland said the event was also a "fantastic opportunity" to promote Scotland to an emerging tourism market.

It said Russian visitors were among the highest spending visitors to Scotland.

'Great destination'

"Our research shows that Russian visitors favour luxury products and that Scotland's breathtaking scenery, fascinating history and unique culture appeals to them," said Pamela McMahon of VisitScotland Borders.

"With the Scottish Borders being world famous for top quality cashmere and knitwear as well as having first class accommodation and attractions our area would be a great choice for Russian visitors."

The tartan was designed by Lesley Penny of Lochcarron taking part of her inspiration from the Red Square and the famous St Basil's Cathedral.

"I hope it will encourage more people to come to Scotland to see for themselves what a great destination it is," she said.
