Selkirk-based Lochcarron of Scotland produced a giant kilt in "muted browns and acid greens" to mark the launch of Shrek the Third later this month.

VisitScotland came up with the idea to encourage people to trace their own history and Scottish roots.

Voice actor Mike Myers - who gave the ogre his accent in 2001 - was presented with the kilt during a visit to London.

Jenni Steele, senior PR Manager at VisitScotland, said the "fun project" had a serious side.

"We wanted to highlight just how diverse Scotland's heritage can be - and if Shrek can have a tartan, so can anyone," she said.

"There are thought to be in excess of 50 million people across the world who can claim Scottish ancestry.

"So this is a great opportunity to be able to link our national heritage with such a well loved film character."

Kilt and plaid

Lochcarron managing director David Ogilvie admitted it had been one of their more unusual projects.

"Clearly this was no ordinary brief for Lochcarron," he said.

"The team rose to the occasion and our designer chose muted browns and acid greens to reflect Shrek's character and status.
