Police have been disappointed by a new year rise in drink-driving

After its festive campaign, the force warned that it would continue to target the issue.

A spokesman said the warning had fallen on "deaf ears" as 30 people were caught drinking and driving in January - up from 21 in the same month a year ago.

Sgt Scott McLachlan urged motorists to "wake up" and recognise their responsibility to drive safely.

He said it was disappointing to see drivers ignoring police advice.

Public help

"One driver was caught and provided a reading which was almost four times over the limit," he said.

He urged the public to report anyone suspected of driving under the influence.

"Drivers need to wake up to the fact that they have a responsibility to drive safely," he said.
