Diver study tests economic waters

Diving could provide an economic boost to the Borders
A new study has been commissioned to look at the economic benefits that diving could bring to the Borders.

More than 20,000 divers a year are estimated to visit the Eyemouth and St Abbs area in Berwickshire.

The study, by Scottish Enterprise Borders, will aim to identify how best to maximise the revenue generated by the water sport in the region.

SEB said it was part of its commitment to develop the area as a top adventure sports destination.

Enhanced facilities and a marketing strategy have been highlighted as areas which could enhance the region's reputation with divers.

SEB director of strategy Julian Pace said the Berwickshire coast was rated one of the best diving sites in the UK.

'International audience'

"Despite its popularity amongst diving enthusiasts, however, it has not been widely promoted to beginners or to an international audience," he said.

"As part of our commitment to developing an adventure sports strategy for the Borders, we want to look at how best to capitalise on the natural beauty and assets we have at locations such as Eyemouth and St Abbs.

"It is also a key part of our strategy for the development of the wider metropolitan region economy in developing greater links with our neighbouring cities such as Edinburgh and Newcastle."
