The Post Office has said the move might be the only way to retain its services in some towns.

Borders Council leader David Parker said the authority wanted to ensure the prominent building did not sit empty after the transfer.

Consultation is already under way over the Galashiels plans.

The Post Office hopes to complete all the transfers by autumn 2008.

'Significant building'

Mr Parker said it was important that the post office building did not lie empty.

"It is a very significant building in Galashiels and we have to lay down a marker that the building does need to be reutilised," he said.

"I think it is important to make it quite clear to the Post Office now that we have concerns about that and we want them to put plans in place.

"I am sure they will be doing that and we will be having discussions about that building in the months going forward."
